I got an email today asking if John Brummett and I get along or do I dislike him because he actually does tell it “Like It Is?’
John and I first met in 1973 when I was just out of the Air Force and he was assistant sports editor of the Arkansas Democrat.
Yes, he was my first immediate boss at the Democrat. I was hired to work on the desk but wanted to be a writer so I on my own time I would go to high school games and write about them. We were an afternoon paper back and sandwiched between work was classes at UALR.
The first feature I ever wrote John read it, read it a second time, tore it up and told me to start over.
I became a student of John’s and learned a great deal from him. He advised me to read writers from all over the country and develop my own style.
John went on to become one of the most talented and gifted writers in the country writing political columns. He’s an author too. He doesn’t always like our coverage of the Razorbacks and I don’t always agree with his political philosophies, but I like John a lot and am proud to say he was my boss.
Oh, the emailer does not like the Razorbacks. All of his emails are negative.
