Coaching searches

For three days the large message boards like Hogville.net have all but got Chris Petersen from Boise State hired to be the new head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Maybe, but the story is he is waiting on Chip Kelly, who wants to coach in the NFL, to leave Oregon.
Lots of talk too about Gus Malzahn and some of these coaching openings, but Malzahn has a $2.4 million buy-out at Arkansas State and while that might not bother an Auburn, some schools simply cannot afford that.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

    Dear Wally Hall,

Thanks for your work at the Dem/Gaz through the years.

Do you think the next Head Football coach at AR will run the type of offense that does not require linebackers to defend? It seems like Ken Hatfield removed some or all of the linebackers and put in extra cornerbacks to beat Houston’s run and shoot offense. Is that really football when your playbook consists of trick plays, reverses, draw plays, and throwing it deep?

If Peterson is the next coach, is he an intelligent person? Think about the blue field at Boise. Will he do something ridiculous at AR? The Mad Hatter at LSU is unpredictable, but what about Peterson? Can he really handle the SEC? SEC schools play the smaller mid-level schools in the early part of every season and usually are expected to win big. Do you realistically think that a Boise level coach would be able to handle the SEC?

This is not a loaded question. I am just nervous about coaches at that level of football. Derek Dooley wasn’t ready to coach TN. If you remember he was really expected to be a great one and left LA Tech to coach at TN. Skip Holtz is another example that didn’t work out over the last couple of years. Dennis Franzionne (sp?) left TCU to coach at AL before Saban, and that didn’t work out either.

I hope Jeff Long knows what he’s doing. Maybe we’ll find out tomorrow.

Malzahn may be the next AR Coach, but he is no better than Derek Dooley, Dennis Franchionne, or Chizek (the Head Coach at Auburn that was recently fired). (Remember, you read it here first.) Chizek and Malzahn had a once in a lifetime situation at Auburn with Cam Newton, and that won’t happen again. The coach at TX A&M has a unique situation this year too, but he’ll be fired when Johnny Quarterback leaves. The only difference is that Malzahn knows some AR High School coaches, but that doesn’t help much. There’s not nearly enough talent in AR alone to have a good Razorback team. Another reason to avoid Malzahn is that he doesn’t have enough college or professional connections to bring in a qualified staff with him. Houston Nutt ran into that problem and had problems bringing in quality assistants to run the program. It takes a lot more than one coach these days, and the assistants have to come in with a plan from day one. Malzahn’s High School coaching buddies aren’t enough to do it in the SEC.

    Wallace

Why did the Democrat go up on price? Enough with the coaching search. Lets talk about other sports for a change instead of the Razorbacks 24/7

Joe you may want to check Gus’ current staff. A few of those have had successful stints at Arkansas in the past!
